  17. <p>San Francisco makes history by hiring the first woman announcer
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     While the San Francisco Giants were in the Arizona desert
  20. working off their winter flab, back home in Candlestick Park a
  21. little bit of history was unfolding. Five hundred candidates
  22. turned up for open auditions to become the team's new stadium
  23. announcer, but none of the dozens of experienced sports
  24. broadcasters vying for the plum platform got the nod. Instead
  25. the Giants will start a rookie--a legal secretary from Walnut
  26. Creek, California. On opening day, April 5, Sherry Davis will
  27. become the first woman ever to be a full-time pro baseball
  28. announcer. The pay: $75 a game. Davis, a longtime baseball buff
  29. with training in TV-commercial voice-overs, has a smooth
  30. delivery the front office hopes fans will prefer to the gab
  31. prevalent around the league.
